UCONN: The Meryl Streep of the NCAA

UCONN: The Meryl Streep of the NCAA

~ Amy Lignor

Meryl_Streep_by_Jack_MitchellMeryl Streep is brought up in all conversations when it comes to fantastic acting. When you switch gears to the college basketball realm, it is the UCONN Huskies that are looked at as the Streep of their industry, except for the fact that they have won eight instead of Meryl’s measly three Oscars out of eighteen career nominations.

In the acting world, being the owner of three ‘golden boys’ puts you in the most exclusive and sought after club in the world. She is joined only by two other (still living members): Daniel Day-Lewis – Abraham Lincoln reborn; and Jack Nicholson. When it comes to basketball, UCONN is already in the headlines. They have already been yelled at by Duke – a team that has already lost and is still blaming the fact that they were seeded incorrectly by being put with the UCONN powerhouse. (Although they failed in the very beginning without ever meeting up with said powerhouse).

The Huskies have a power that they have owned for a good, long time. In other words, until their coach actually decides to retire, the guy has got a permanent job in CT because of the amazing teams he brings about. And, yes, even our own President Obama chose the undefeated UCONN to beat the undefeated Notre Dame in the final to take, for the ninth time, the NCAA women’s accolade.

UCONN looks a lot like your faves in the NFL, although the Super Bowl champs were not undefeated. Neither were the ones everyone assumed would be when January came around. But for  UCONN, they entered with a 34-0 record, with Notre Dame coming in with a 33-0 record. Notre Dame is also a team that is no stranger to the Final Four, being that this would be their fourth straight appearance.

Oddly enough, The Fighting Irish are sounding a lot like Duke. They feel as if they are unappreciated in the sport, seeing as that the UCONN women are always being spoken about by almost every expert on the air. You have to wonder if the Seahawks felt that way about the Broncos accolades and the beloved Peyton Manning.

But moving on and avoiding talk is really the way to go. After all, Notre Dame has just as much of a chance to win it all as UCONN. So instead of whining, working would be good. They most likely have changed their tune after watching Duke fall to a 14th-seed Mercer.

Another odd fact is that Notre Dame has not even met up with UCONN this season; they have met each other across the court twelve times over the past three, with the Irish being the winners of a majority of the games – but not this season. Of course, they seem to be jumping the gun here anyway, a lot like Duke did when they began whining about their placement. Because the unbeaten Notre Dame should still remember that to even get to play UCONN (and for UCONN to even get to play Notre Dame), there are two more quiet teams waiting in the wings.

Silent but deadly, they should not be counted out: Tennessee and South Carolina are also No. 1 seeds, and pretending that they are not able to get to the Final Four is silly.

So what is UCONN whining about? Well…nothing thus far. The coach has always been a leader, making sure his women act like professionals; whether they win or lose they must do so with class. In other words, they are remaining silent as Duke (not anymore), and Notre Dame, have things to say about why they are not in the spotlight as brightly as the Huskies.

So what happens now? Well…for Duke the road is over and the ‘speak’ doesn’t matter. What will be hard for both Duke and Notre Dame would be if UCONN once again earns the spotlight they haven’t yet asked for and takes home their ninth ‘Oscar’.

By the way, Meryl Streep has a lovely home in a small town in Connecticut, so perhaps she will be cheering for the biggest winner of all time.

Until Next Time,

Amy
