Three better ideas for leaf disposal

DRPower L0549smIn this day of “going green” and organic gardening it’s worth considering how best to use those leaves collecting on the ground in your yard.

DR Power offers a complete lineup of leaf and lawn vacuums to collect leaves. Once you’ve collected them here are three tips on how to turn what used to be waste into a valuable resource.

Tip #1: Make leaf mold

Leaf mold greatly improves the water-holding capacity of soil. That can mean savings to your water bill. The mold also improves soil quality, providing a possible savings on fertilizer, because leaf mold contains valuable stores of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Making leaf mold is easy and there are two ways to do it. The lazy way involves gathering leaves into a sheltered, inconspicuous area of your yard and leaving them undisturbed for two years. The more ambitious method is to make a 3-by-3-foot cage from wooden stakes and chicken wire. Pile the leaves in the cage. Speed up the rate of decomposition by occasionally turning the pile. Keep it moist during extended periods of dry weather.

Tip #2: Make compost

Don’t spurn this purest of organic gardening practices. Making a compost pile might also inspire you to till a small plot of your yard and plant a garden. The bumper crop of fresh vegetables will provide a healthy source of nutrition while cutting costs from the grocery bill. Make compost from fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and grass clippings. Leaves are a great foundation for starting the compost bed. All it takes to fuel the decomposition is occasionally turning the pile with a shovel or rake.

Dry leaves can be raked into perennial gardens or shrub borders to make a pure form of organic mulch. Leaves add nutrients to the soil as they break down, while keeping the soil moist and shaded. That in turn reduces weeds and watering needs. The eventual deterioration of leaves also provides a welcoming environment for earthworms and soil organisms required to sustain any organic garden.
