New Brunswick, NJ —State Theatre presents The Taj Mahal Trio and The Blind Boys of Alabama on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at 8pm. Tickets range from $35-75.
Grammy® Award-winners The Taj Mahal Trio and The Blind Boys of Alabama team up for an amazing concert that includes the sounds of American blues and gospel.
With a career that began more than four decades ago with American blues, two-time Grammy® Award-winner Taj Mahal has broadened his artistic scope over the years to include music representing virtually every corner of the world—west Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, the Hawaiian islands, and so much more. This self-taught singer-songwriter and film composer plays the guitar, piano, banjo, and harmonica. His Grammy®-winning albums include Señor Blues (1997) and Shoutin’ in Key (2000).
The Blind Boys of Alabama are a gospel group that first formed in 1939 at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind at Talladega, Alabama. Since then, the group has earned five Grammy® Awards, was honored with the Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, are Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductees, have performed for three U.S. Presidents, and have appeared on numerous television programs, including a feature performance at the 2005 Grammy®’s with Mavis Staples, Kanye West, and John Legend. Other on stage collaborations include work with Prince, Lou Reed, Pater Gabriel, Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Allen Toussaint, Ben Harper, and many more. The group’s latest album I’ll Find a Way was produced by Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver). This is a unique collaboration between one of popular music’s most enduring acts and one of its fastest-rising stars. It’s a powerful collection of gospel and spiritual songs new and old.
