The Perfect ‘Pattern’ for the Spring Turkey Hunt

The Perfect ‘Pattern’ for the Spring Turkey Hunt

images (1)Hunters are now salivating as much as their canine sidekicks do when treats are about to be thrown. Why is that? Because even though it does not look like it in the Northeast, with the snow continuing and the freezing cold sticking in place, the first signs of spring are beginning to emerge farther South, and soon the turkey hunt will begin.

It is not a stretch to say that the gobbling resounds in the heart of the turkey hunter when it’s time to go. And whether the last hunt was sheer perfection, or was a sheer nightmare because the ammo was wrong, the camo was not up to par, or the tips to make the hunt a success were just not listened to – every hunter wants to get back out there and have fun.

That old Boy Scout mantra of ‘Be Prepared!’ must be a part of your preparations. As with any prey, the turkey must be well known to its hunters. And, above all, the shotguns used must be learned down to the smallest factor. The ammo must be the best, of course, but learning the gun’s sights and working on the pattern are highly important.

A gun must be used that you are comfortable with, and what makes the perfect turkey gun will be the perfect turkey choke. A Full choke is the best turkey choke, and are usually labeled Extra Full or XX Full.

Depending on the combination of gun and choke, the spring turkey hunter must be very careful and fully aware of what they choose. After all, over-constricting the shot to the point where the pattern falls apart can occur. If this happens, pellets can bounce off each other or become deformed – blowing large holes through your pattern that will leave you unsuccessful on the hunt.

The ammunition, of course, is a big concern. That gun-choke combination picked will shoot a specific round better than other rounds. So the only sure way to determine what the best shot is, is to practice with a variety of them. Vary shot sizes, vary brands, vary the distance used – and then choose the ammo that gives the perfect pattern every single shot.

For those just starting out, the ideal pattern you’re looking for when it comes to hunting the gobbler is 100 pellets in a 10-inch circle at 40 yards. This density will deliver the right amount of pellets in the vital area of the turkey’s head and neck. The reason for patterning the turkey gun out to 40 yards is because that’s the maximum distance promoted by the Turkey Hunting Safety Task Force for a clean, correct kill.

Use a 30-inch target to practice getting the perfect pattern; draw a two-inch circle in the middle, color it in, then draw a 10-inch circle centered on that. Measure off those ‘must-use’ 40 yards, and then begin with a brace when you shoot in order to get just where you want to be. And always remember that adding rifle sights or scopes can help create the perfect shot pattern.

One such company to turn to for the perfect ammunition for your spring turkey hunt is HEVI-Shot.
