Getting in Shape or Winning Competitions: Weight Training is #1
In this age of health and physical fitness, the need for weight training has grown substantially. Gyms are overloaded, with more and more franchises having to open across the country just to handle the overflow of people who wish to change their lives and get in shape.
Weight training has become quite common for both women and men; it is no longer seen as something that only Arnold Schwarzenegger types do for sport. Weight training is now the chosen exercise for the development of strength and size of a person’s muscles. Using gravity, weight training with weighted bars, dumbbells, or weight stacks, helps build muscle by opposing the force of gravity using specialized equipment that targets the specific muscle groups you want to get in shape.
Weight training is also needed by athletes in all disciplines. Bodybuilding, weightlifting, power-lifting, and strongman are the disciplines that are part of the weight-training universe. But everything from football to rowing, must utilize weight training in order to build strength.
Weight training is also, most likely, the oldest form of strength training that has ever been seen on this planet. Go to the very first day of recorded history and you will find writings and pictures that show men gathering strength and increasing their muscles to compete in various sports.
When it comes to the Olympics, Ancient Greece, is the bearer of it all. It is the place where the first legend began of weight training began – when the wrestler, Milo of Croton, actually trained and gathered strength by transporting a newborn calf on his back every day. Until it grew up, of course.
Staying with the famous Greeks, there was also Galen, the physician, who wrote about strength training exercises using what he called the ‘halteres’ (what we in the 21st century refer to as the dumbbell). The dumbbell came first, the barbell second. And although the barbells of today are technologically different, the first were filled with sand or lead shot, that could be seen through the hollow globes at each end of the pole.
And even though men were the ones who turned to weight training in order to better themselves at sports, as well as create physiques that would be among the ‘pictures of perfection’ that the Greeks honored way back when, females were not to be left behind. What began as a small contingent grew larger over time, and now, in 2014, at least one out of every five women in the United States have added weight training to their daily physical regimen.
The style of weight training is up to the individual who is choosing it. Some use repetition exercises, others use tempo and music styles to build their regimen around; whatever is best for them in order to reach the level of endurance they wish to achieve.
The score of equipment never ends. Not only are the ‘older’ or ‘original’ pieces of equipment still around, but the new and different types create help with resistance training. All different types of machines are utilized by weight and strength trainers, and mentors make sure that all men and women practicing the discipline learn ‘good form’, which means reaching the best and healthiest ways of weight training that will strengthen the correct muscle groups, but not cause injury to the human body.
It will always remain that when it come to weight training, having an instructor who knows what they’re doing is extremely necessary. No body can survive overload and, if done wrong, weight training can cause definite damage.
So…whether you wish to follow in the Greek path, or simply turn to weight training in order to feel better and healthier, make sure you do it the right way!
